A lot of the work is done by hand because the Amish traditions forbid use of mechanical tools. This means that the process of furniture making is largely done using old fashioned tools and the finishing in particular, is done by hand. The sanding and polishing is done by hand as the master craftsmen of yore would have done it.
Futons are easy to transport to and move into a cabin because they are sold in pieces for (easy) assembly at home, and cost less as a result. Even if you have a small cabin door, the unassembled futon frame will fit through it! Futon assembly is a simple process that takes only an hour or two with a wrench and a screwdriver. You can find futons that have drawers underneath and secret compartments in which to store bedding when not in use. When its time to close up and go home, stow your blankets, pillows, and sheets away for safekeeping.
And here is a teeny secret Michael is too modest to speak about, but I will let you in on the truth.
